Ad Hoc Networking and Car-to-Car Communications

Shelob open platform

Shelob collects main applications that InLab in cooperation with EmSys designed and developed to handle communications for mesh and vehicular networks. These applications share the same hardware and software platform, based on Alix platform and OpenWRT Linux distribution.
A Shelob description in Italian is available here.

This page describes the HW platform and the OpenWRT configuration, offering a simple tutorial to build the Shelob base system.

Advanced algorithm for the frequency spectrum analysis

InLab proposes a degree thesis about the development of an advanced algorithm for the frequency spectrum analysis.

Design and development of a wireless mesh node

InLab proposes a degree thesis about the design and the development of a wireless mesh node in a urban context.

VICSUM overview

The Vehicle-to-Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Communication for Sustainable Urban Mobility (VICSUM) project involves three partners: Politecnico di Torino, CRF and CSP.

The project proposal is set against a backdrop of widespread promotion of
high-speed, wireless technologies. The range of new network services envisioned
through such technologies is appealing. Among these services, user interest is
focusing on those that provide seamless connectivity while users are on the
move, whether on their own vehicle or on public transportation. In such a
scenario, commercial services and access to public information are available
through vehicles transiting in specific areas where such information is
broadcast. Data retrieved can be stored on the vehicle; then, they can be used
and rebroadcast at a later time without the need of persistent connectivity.

The main goals of the proposed project are the following:

  • definition of mobile ad hoc network (MANET) architectures and protocols, enabling Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and a Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication;
  • devolpment of an on-board enabling platform and its integration with existing environments and tools (FIAT Blue&Me platform);
  • definition of application scenarios for V2V and V2I infrastructures aimed at designing, developing and testing a complete prototype (hardware, software and testbed).

WiNoT overview

WiNoT is an acronym for Wireless Nomadic Transfer over Mobile Ad hoc Networks. The aim of our work is to project and develop a framework based on a store-and-forward approach to carry up and to transport Internet data.
The system architecture is based on several relays that receive application data; these nodes can be installed on cars or buses and are able to interoperate to exchange user data.

Through WiNoT framework, a user can send an e-mail without a persistent Internet connection; his WiNoT node stores data and when a bus with another WiNoT node appears, it forwards the e-mail to the new node. During its run, when the bus meets a node with an Internet connection, it forwards the e-mail to the new relay; then, the e-mail can be send to the end-user.
