Distributed Spectrum Analisys

As the IP network are getting spread and it is possible to get connected in wider areas, it becomes interesting the SDR opportunity to acquire the specrtum in a place and view and analize it in a place as far as the IP network allows.

Many approaches are possible and the components placed on each side of the network can vary a lot:

  • The first approach is to host all component (acquiring, FFT transform, view) on the same host and to get a remote view of the output through well known desktop remotization techniques
    • PROS: ease of realization
    • CONS: scalability, portability
  • A second approach is to acquire the spectrum and transport the I/Q data to a remote site where the other tasks are exploited
    • PROS: likely no limitations to anlisys alghoritm tha can be used
    • CONS: bandwidth requirements, scalability
  • A third approach is to acquire and do FFT trasform of the spectrum where it is gathered from the air and to transport just the FFT data. To reduce the bandwidth occupation can be sent just one FFT every N or to seand the mean value of the last N as sending all would be an amount of data too big and maybe unuseful.
    • PROS: scalability, portability
    • CONS: time of development

Decoder DTT

Per ricevere e  decodificare il segnale televisivo DTT e fruire dei contenuti trasmessi è necessario utilizzare:

 •         Set-top box interattivo: tale dispositivo permette di ricevere sia i canali digitali trasmessi in chiaro sia quelli di tipo "pay per view". E' distinguibile per la presenza di uno o più lettori per Smart Card nella parte frontale. E' compatibile con le applicazioni interattive (in standard MHP) grazie anche alla disponibilità di un canale di ritorno (tramite interfaccia telefonica o ethernet).

 •         Zapper: è un decoder digitale terrestre in grado di visualizzare i soli contenuti televisivi trasmessi in chiaro. E' disponibile in diversi formati tra cui il modello denominato zapper scart (di dimensioni molto ridotte). Non è possibile utilizzare le applicazioni interattive.

 •         Tuner integrato: è il decodificatore digitale terresatre presente in tutti gli apparecchi televisivi in vendita nei principali negozi e centri commerciali. Nella maggior parte dei nuovi televisori è presente una Common Interface in grado di interfacciarsi con le CAM necessarie all'utilizzo delle Smart Card per in servizi a pagamento. Il tuner digitale è presente anche in molti DVD player (portatili e stand-alone) e DVD/HDD recorder. Non è possibile utilizzare le applicazioni interattive.

Click&Flickr is a demonstrator application for the programming environment Mobile Processing. It is the result of a learning process which passed through different application versions and experienced remarkable improvements both in the graphical aspects and for what the usability and functionalities concern.

A new EmSysLab branch at Torino Polytechnic

Following the cooperation among CSP Labs and the Torino academic system, EmSysLab has how his own branch in the Torino Polytechnic see, reinforcing the typical CSP's Labs overlapping model, mixing toghether academic and applyed research.

From a reaserch viewpoint, activities will be headed by Prof. Gianpiero Cabodi of DAUIN - Department of control and computer engineering - while managed by internal CSP’s personnel for what it concern the technical and applyed component.

Shelob open platform

Shelob collects main applications that InLab in cooperation with EmSys designed and developed to handle communications for mesh and vehicular networks. These applications share the same hardware and software platform, based on Alix platform and OpenWRT Linux distribution.

EnviMon project: a short update

Some news from EnviMon project: the hardware platform is ready, the software platform reaches the development final stage.

The main scenario that this project wants achieve is to create a network of wireless, autonomous and low cost devices for environmental data collecting.

RadioMON

Almost any ham radio receiver currently being sold allows some kind of software control connecting it to a PC (RS232, USB, etc..).

Using one of these software, is possible to achieve a simplified and a much more powerful use of the radio, because we have full access to the power of modern personal computers (better memory management, improved interactions with keyboard and mouse, etc..).

Anyway, this kind of software control cannot be define a real remote control, since, to listen the audio of the tuned frequencies, the listener still have to be in the proximity of the radio. Moreover, the length of the computer-radio connection cable is not unlimited (usually being in the range of 0-3 meters).

For a real remote control, an unlimited physical separation between radio and listener is needed, so not only control, but also the audio signal have to be transferred from the radio to he user.

Currently, many software offers capabilities of software control for many brand and models of radio (both commercials and open source), but they are usually limited to a single radio, or to a limited set of brands/models.
Most of these software, are simply aimed to software control the radio, but very few allow a real remote control.

RadioMonitor is a system for a real remote control of virtually any radio, that can be extended by any user adding new brands/models, with advanced features such as authentication, user profiling, reserved frequency management, audio stream encryption, and much more.

RadioMON: architecture

The system is based on a client-server paradigm with a modular architecture based on plugins (simple DLL files) any of which implements low level communication with a specific radio.
