W3Lab

Introduction

W3Lab, established together with the IT Department of Università di Torino, focuses
on application architectures and user interface development.

What it does

The laboratory carries out the following activities:
  • Analysis and study of technological scenarios
  • Applied research projects regarding innovative technologies
  • Development of technological demos
  • Presentation of results nationally and internationally
  • Technology transfer to the local area with particular reference to the business world.

Research Themes

The work of the laboratory focuses mainly on:
  • Digital libraries. Study and experimentation of technologies and tools regarding the management and consultation of digital libraries, such as:
    • Semantic annotation of digital content
    • Multi-channel, multi-modal access systems
    • Enterprise Content Management.
  • HCI (Human Computer Interface). Technologies and tools for creating interactive interfaces such as:
    • Multi-touch and surface computing systems
    • Gesture recognition systems
    • Design and assessment techniques for interactive interfaces.
  • Parallel Computing. Study and experimentation of technologies and tools regarding the creation of parallel applications, in particular:
    • Porting applications to GRID platforms
    • Techniques for developing multi-core architectures
    • Development on dedicated hardware: special purpose accelerators and DSP.
  • Mobile applications. Study and experimentation of technologies and tools regarding the creation of applications for mobile devices, in particular:
    • Mobile platforms: J2ME, MAEMO, iPhone, Symbian and Android
    • Localization and identification techniques
    • Gesture recognition through accelerometers and gyroscopes
    • Principal development frameworks.
  • Application architectures. Study and experimentation of technologies and tools regarding the creation of distributed applications, in particular:
    • Web services: SOAP and REST approaches
    •  Rich Client platforms
    • Web development frameworks.
